Length vs. height: what's the difference?

Growth charts distinguish between length (measured with the baby lying flat, used up to age 2) and height (measured standing, used from age 2 onward). This distinction matters because a standing measurement is typically slightly shorter than a lying measurement, roughly by 0.5–1cm, due to spinal compression under gravity — growth charts already account for this difference.

Reading your baby's height percentile

A percentile from 3rd to 97th is within the typical healthy range. Height percentile tends to be more stable over time than weight percentile, since height is less affected by short-term factors like recent feeding or illness — a sudden shift is more likely to prompt a closer look from your pediatrician.
